We live in a world where there are so many different ways of communicating with each other that we often feel swamped with information and it can be quite overwhelming. It feels like we have to be everywhere, at every moment and it can turn us in to very distracted people. The Computer Stare Think about all the occasions when you've approached someone's desk to talk and you both try to have a conversation while the other person continues to look at their computer and never makes eye contact.

The Phone Fanatic Or when you've met a friend who you haven't seen for a while and you apologetically answer your phone or text (sorry, just let me do this, I'm still listening) more than once while you're with them.

The Email Ether Or consider the habit many of us have all got in to of receiving emails and rarely acknowledging them with a response because we've forgotten that there's a person at the other end.

This might seem like a bit of a rant but I've been guilty of some of these bad habits too. When we're busy and life is demanding, it's easy for us to be distracted and forget the simple act of acknowledging the effort that someone else has gone to, however small.

So take a moment today and regardless of whatever is going on with you, treat others as you would like to be treated. Make eye contact, put the phone away, say thanks for the email. You're a human, not a robot. (Although robots are quite cool.)
