Sometimes, you turn up to work and you just CANNOT ….BE ….BOTHERED. It can be an immediate feeling, or it can creep up on you like a lethargic virus and by lunchtime, you're wandering the corridors with bits of paper in your hand to disguise the fact that you've just spent half an hour chatting to Security Bob to avoid whatever it is that you think you should be doing.
The thing about the lethargy virus is that it often brings with it, its friend, guilt complex. You can't seem to fight the lethargy but you're also wrestling with the fact that you should be doing something, achieving something, being productive. This feeling can grip us just as much out of work as in it.
Don't be too hard on yourself. Sometimes we need a bit of downtime and it's likely that tomorrow you'll feel motivated again. And if not, if this is becoming a regular experience and Security Bob is beginning to think that he might need to get a restraining order out against you, it might be time to think about whether the job is right.
Otherwise, don't always feel like you have to be 'doing' in order to prove your worth to the world. Remember, we're human beings, not human doings.
